Dr Seán Williams On Hairdressing & Its Cultural History From The 18th Century Onwards

December 2, 2019

[142] We rarely stop to think about where traditions and professions come from. Be that as it may, history can help us discover how some human experiences aren't always so foreign to those lived centuries ago.

In history, the hairdresser is an artistic and self-made character. Featuring Dr Seán Williams, lecturer in German and European Cultural History at the University of Sheffield, this week's conversation connects the past and its legacy to the present, and celebrates hairdressing and its cultural history from the 18th century onwards.

Ronit Enos On Financial Literacy & Changing Salons’ Money Stories

Ronit Enos On Financial Literacy & Changing Salons’ Money Stories

November 18, 2019

[140] Money is great, right? Making lots of money is even better, right? But let's ask ourselves why. Why do we want more money? Like it or not, money brings shame and confusion. It's intimidating, and we make up stories about money that aren't true.

What's your money story? Maybe you grew up with too little? Too much? Perhaps you were taught that it was wrong to want more? To ignore the money because it just caused too many problems? We bring all those stories into adult life and our businesses. Numbers and finances can be overwhelming and can paralyse you if you let them. But you don't have to.

Featuring Ronit Enos, salon and spa business coach and the creator of SalonCadence.com, this week’s conversation is all about changing your money story.

Joshua Howard & Andrew Best On Increasing Profitability And Making Every Drop Of Color Count

October 7, 2019

Featuring CEO Joshua Howard and COO Andrew Best of color management system Vish (@vishsalons on Instagram), this week's conversation explores how without effective systems, salon owners are left to manage their color business with estimates and manufacturer benchmarks, and what strategies can help eliminate waste, improve relationships, and increase profits.

Antony Whitaker On Expanding Your Salon Or Spa Business

[133] Opportunity often comes knocking at your door when you least expect it. Sometimes though, it's all about creating that right opportunity instead of waiting for it to come. Jay Williams On Emotional Intelligence As A Competitive Differentiator

Jay Williams On Emotional Intelligence As A Competitive Differentiator

September 9, 2019

[132] People weren't actively buying on Amazon ten years ago. We weren't streaming our movies at home, nor were we getting our groceries delivered. We're getting to a point where someone might have 1/40th of the human interaction they would have had 20,30 years ago. That creates a premium on the hair and beauty industry's craft. Robots and AI might be knocking at various industries' doors, but they'll only be replacing repetitive and monotonous jobs. According to the World Economic Forum, the ability to read, understand and adjust behaviour when facing various emotions will be one of the top ten skills businesses will be giving importance to in the coming years, especially when hiring staff.

Featuring business coach, speaker and author Jay Williams, this week's conversation picks up a concept left hanging in Phorest FM Episode 116: emotional intelligence.

Sean O’Sullivan On Setting & Managing Salon Staff Targets

Sean O’Sullivan On Setting & Managing Salon Staff Targets

August 19, 2019

[130] While some are born to take on challenges and go for gold at every given opportunity, most people will do their best to perform but need guidance and defined goals. Despite this well-known fact, staff targets get a bad rap: they don't work, or they're too much effort to manage. Even from the employee's perspective, there's often a pushback. A shift in how to approach them can solve all of that. If what you're saying to your staff looks anything like this: "I need you to do this and reach these numbers by x, without any support whatsoever," it's no wonder things aren't working.

Featuring Sean O'Sullivan (Phorest Education Manager), this week's episode focuses on all things staff targets: how to set and manage them, get employee buy-in as well as encourage team collaboration.

Tamara Shaw On The 7 Steps Of Highly Effective Salon & Spa Customer Journeys

Tamara Shaw On The 7 Steps Of Highly Effective Salon & Spa Customer Journeys

August 12, 2019

[129] If you were asked to detail the seven crucial steps in a salon or spa's customer journey, would you be able to nail all of them down? Are you solely focused on the quality of your treatments and services? Taking clients through a journey enriches their relationships with your brand while providing a safe space for you and your clients to discuss their worries and come up with tailored solutions. Optimising this can often make the difference between your salon or spa and the one across the street.

Featuring Beaute Industrie's Founding Director & Community Creator Tamara Shaw, this week's episode explores what successful customer journeys are made of, other than being a planned combination of activities, preferences and paths a client can take within your business.

Billy Rickman On The Mindset Of The New Age Salonpreneur

July 22, 2019

[126] You have two salon owners. One who works 40 hrs/week in the salon, servicing clients, trying to look after the team as well as all the other internal operations. She's tired, stressed & frustrated by the slow growth and always running flat out just to stay ahead. The other salon owner works 40 hrs/week on the business, but away from the salon. She is motivated each day by the results she is seeing from driving people into the business and having happy and motivated staff.

Fundamentally, why are their results so different? And more importantly, which one of the two types of owners are you? Featuring Australia-based business coach Billy Rickman, also the franchisor of XY Skin and Body Specialists and founder of SalonGrowthCon, this week’s episode explores the future of salon ownership. Be ready for a pinch of tough love and a shift in mindset.

[125] With the damage to our environment and the increase of plastic waste an ever growing concern, becoming more knowledgeable about the products we use, our actions and habits is key in discovering how we can make friendlier choices for both the environment as well as for ourselves.

In 2012, Professor Denise Baden from the Southampton Business School was awarded funds from the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) to engage with hairdressers and their clients to establish more sustainable practices. Following the success of this project, she has since been working with awarding organisations to further embed sustainability into the industry’s practices. A couple of weeks out of Conscious Hair & Beauty taking place in London at which Professor Denise Baden will be speaking, this episode explores ways to motivate eco-friendly behaviours and sustainable solutions in the salon industry.

Rachel Ringwood On Breaking The Barrier Of Mental, Physical & Spiritual Health As A Hairstylist

Rachel Ringwood On Breaking The Barrier Of Mental, Physical & Spiritual Health As A Hairstylist

July 8, 2019

[124] According to Gary Vaynerchuk’s definition of the word, hustling is putting every minute and all your effort into achieving the goal at hand. Every minute needs to count. But what happens when you forget to take care of yourself? When you’re so caught up in the hustling, that you ignore the signs your body sends you?

Hairstylists are often so busy they tend to put their own health aside for their clients. Back to back bookings may prevent many from eating, hydrating or even stopping to stretch. Featuring Miami-based hairstylist, owner, entrepreneur and mental health advocate Rachel Ringwood, this week's episode brings to light her struggles with the hustling, how a traumatic brain injury made her reevaluate her health and lifestyle & what she’s now doing to raise awareness to the matter.

Switching Salon Software: Insider Tips For A Seamless Transition

Switching Salon Software: Insider Tips For A Seamless Transition

June 10, 2019

[120] For many, opening a salon is a thrilling, yet scary experience. After a while though, once the wheels are in motion, habits start forming. After a couple years, the salon runs things a certain way, and the thought of changing that up by switching salon software, for instance, is likely to trigger some fear.

Fear for creating a short period of instability; that it won’t work out the way you imagined it would. Fear that you’ll lose data or that your staff won’t get it. Fear of leaving a comfort zone.

Our brains consider what is known to be far safer. The only way past this is to some research, plan things as best as you can and make educated decisions. Featuring Paul Kiersey (Phorest Onboarding Team Lead) and Will Hulihan (Phorest Brand Ambassador), this week’s episode focuses on insider tips for a seamless transition from one salon software company to another.

Amanda Olusanya On Developing Individual Greatness & Retaining Top Performers

June 3, 2019

[119] Top performers: you can always count on them to get things done and exceed expectations. Unfortunately, they also tend to be the first to walk out the door. For salons and spas, the idea of losing them is terrifying.

However, there's a lot to be said about developing individual greatness. A lot of, no pun intended, great things to say. Sports, for instance, provide several key lessons on the matter. In episode 119, Aveda educator and salon owner Amanda Olusanya (Allen Ray Salon) discusses her research findings and ideas on the topic.

Jay Williams On The Difference Between Satisfied & Loyal Clients, And Why It Matters

Jay Williams On The Difference Between Satisfied & Loyal Clients, And Why It Matters

May 13, 2019

[116] When we frame an idea, a problem, or an opportunity, we are choosing our perspective. Look at a "glass as half-empty," and we start conserving and protecting. Seeing the same glass as "half-full" and opportunity and growth emerge. Our thinking shifts simply by how we choose to look at or "frame" something. Jay Williams's latest video series "Eat This, Not That… A Leader's List Of Ingredients To Create Better Communication" is essentially a guide to reframing our perspective on various concepts and situations.

Discussing a topic from his series, this week's episode focuses on satisfaction and loyalty: what makes both concepts different, why it matters and most importantly, what makes loyalty more valuable in the long run.

Charlotte Bradshaw & Leslie Healy On The Power Of Networking

May 6, 2019

[115] Networking has long been recognised for its many benefits in the business world. It has the power to help you build awareness of your products or services, learn about people you might never have known otherwise and/or meet potential future employers or employees. Knowing more people is usually an advantage: it's easier to share information and when your network comes together, the power of influence of said group is redoubtable.

To discuss the power of networking in the hair and beauty industry specifically, this week's episode features two women with years of experience in the trade: Salonetwork founders Charlotte Bradshaw, who has worked in the industry for the past ten years and Leslie Healy, who hails from a twelve year background in the corporate world.

Katie Lowndes On The ABC’s Of Hosting A Successful Salon Retail Event

April 1, 2019

[110] When it comes to hosting a salon retail demo we picture incredibly well-displayed merchandise accompanied by free wine, canapés, live music and a big budget; a very, very big budget.

Yes, retail events are a fantastic way of showcasing your salons inventory and for your team to demonstrate their expertise when it comes to products used in treatments. However, a no expenses spared approach isn't always the best way to go about rocking a successful retail demo. In fact, it could do more damage than you think. In this episode, Katie Lowndes, founder of Beauty Sale Mate and Katie’s Beauty Kitchen, will take you through the pros and cons of hosting a retail demo and more importantly, how it can be done on a shoestring budget.

Ryan Power On Using The Blurred Lines Between Personal & Business Personas As A Marketing Advantage

March 18, 2019

[108] Just as the world wide web celebrates its 30th birthday, we, as users, are becoming more aware of online privacy. We're also increasingly wary of the impact that social media can have on our professional lives. But the reality is, the lines between online personal and professional personas have never been so blurred, which is causing a lot of headaches in the entrepreneurial world. As a small business owner, can you use those blurred lines to your advantage?

To discuss the matter and some specific Facebook salon/spa marketing tactics, Killian and Zoe have a sit down with UK-based coach, speaker, author and co-founder of Salonology, Ryan Power.

Ronan Perceval & Nuala Maguire On How Rebooking SMS Prompts Help Retain An Extra 6% Clients

Ronan Perceval & Nuala Maguire On How Rebooking SMS Prompts Help Retain An Extra 6% Clients

February 18, 2019

[105] Rebooking has a massive impact on salons and spas’ client loyalty. Unfortunately, not every client is always ready to pencil in a new appointment while they're at the til. More even, it can be challenging to get your staff in the habit of asking people to rebook, and well maybe you don’t have a receptionist, so you’re relying on your team when they’re busy getting ready for their next client.

Phorest's new predictive rebooking SMS feature is geared towards clients who, based on their individual history with your salon, are due to come back to the salon soon. It's pre-emptive: you're offering these clients the chance to book maybe before they've even realised they need to. And from over 400 salons trialling this feature in February 2019, a total of €2,000 worth of rebooking SMS has been sent, resulting in over €93,000 salon revenue from the appointments booked as a result of those texts. Nearly a 50:1 return there, and on average an extra 6% clients retained against salons who hadn't been using the feature. On the show to discuss these findings and more, Killian and Zoe are joined by Phorest CEO, Ronan Perceval, and Product Data Analyst, Nuala Maguire!
