Georgia Bell On Mentoring, Commitment & Investing In Yourself

October 12, 2020

[182] If you don't already meet someone like a salon coach or a mentor to discuss your career or business setbacks or to plan for the future, then you should. Having a few people in your corner is one of the most invaluable things. However, finding a mentor doesn't happen overnight, and for it to be a successful arrangement, you'll need to show up and put the relationship before the mentorship.

Featuring salon owner, educator and celebrity stylist Georgia Bell (@georgiabellhair, @societybygeorgiabell), this week's episode discusses the right and wrong ways to approach people who inspire you, why mentors look for commitment, investing in yourself & paying it forward, as well as Georgia's education programs.

Alison Alhamed On The Life-Changing Power Of Community

Alison Alhamed On The Life-Changing Power Of Community

September 14, 2020

[179] Suppose life longevity can be rooted in our level of connection to others. Would it be such a great leap to think that career longevity might have its roots in connection too? What if the story we made ourselves about successful people and success too often failed us; made us doubt our worth, skills, knowledge, experiences? What if support from like-minded people and professionals was at times all we needed to keep going?

Featuring Alison Alhamed, Vice President of Social Media & Community at R+Co, this week's episode takes a look into the meaning of "community," and discusses how brand-engineered ones can positively impact businesses, careers and lives altogether.

Derek Anthony On Growing A Seven-Figure Business Using Mobile Technology

Derek Anthony On Growing A Seven-Figure Business Using Mobile Technology

August 17, 2020

[176] Reaching the $1+ million in revenue mark in business doesn't mean everything is smooth sailing or running at its peak performance; growing pains are still very much part of the process. And while they can be challenging in the moment, overcoming them can create competitive advantage opportunities.

A little over a year ago, NYC-based salon D Anthony (@d_anthonyhair) underwent a culture reset led by entrepreneur, salon owner and master stylist Derek Anthony (@derek__anthony_), for which the central theme was modernization.

Featuring the man himself, this week's episode discusses what rethinking the D Anthony brand and its operations both required, as well as how communication and mobile technology usage — among other things — were vital pieces to the salon's next stage of business growth.

James Davis On Leading Through Change & Becoming A Community Linchpin

James Davis On Leading Through Change & Becoming A Community Linchpin

August 10, 2020

[175] When the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year, James Davis went back to digging deep, working 16-hour days, and thinking outside the box to figure out what he could do to keep his various business operations alive and lead positively through change and uncertainty.

Enabling his salon, Clay, to financially evolve while supporting the team with a new work platform as they returned, his 'thinking outside the box' mindset also led to a village togetherness featured in national newspapers and magazines. Inspired by the "Pay It Forward" mentality and determined to give back to the very people who had contributed to his entrepreneurial success over the years, James Davis pulled together volunteers from all fields and launched Oxshott Delivery.

In this episode, hear Phorest's CEO Ronan Perceval and entrepreneur James Davis discuss recent projects, what changes both lockdown and reopening have brought to his salon, and how leading positively through change positioned him and his local businesses as community linchpins.

Meabh Quoirin On Consumer Trends & Insights To Shape The Industry’s Future

Meabh Quoirin On Consumer Trends & Insights To Shape The Industry’s Future

July 13, 2020

[171] The industry is likely never to go back to the way it operated before COVID-19. As salons and spas progressively reopen, they are also shaping a new normal.

Before the pandemic, people conceived of beauty experiences in four main ways: convenience, skills, pampering and an indulgent experience, and finally, a sense of connection and community, visiting the same beautician every single time and being able to talk about personal and beauty-related issues. Will that remain true for years to come? That's what companies like Foresight Factory are in the business of predicting.

Featuring CEO and co-owner of Foresight Factory, Meabh Quoirin, this week's episode discusses consumer trends and insights that are changing the hair & beauty industry's foreseeable future.

Zane Hagy On Resilience, Crisis Communication & Paving Your Own Way

May 18, 2020

[164] In times of uncertainty, our natural inclination is often to look for answers and validation in others to make sure we're doing things right. What we tend to forget, though, is that someone else's decision about their business might not be the right one for us (no matter how good the idea or action is). When it comes to your brand, your business, do what feels right for you. Learn from the past and others, only to then pave your very own way.

Featuring PR and marketing professional Zane Hagy, this week's conversation explores crisis communication, the concept of resilience and the power that lies in being a black sheep.

Dawn Bradley On Setting Healthy Back To Work Boundaries

Dawn Bradley On Setting Healthy Back To Work Boundaries

April 20, 2020

[160] "If you are a hairstylist, sleep now — because when this is all over you better have your doors open 24/7 for the amount of un-groomed, boxed hair dyed, home cut bangs you're going to have to fix." NO — that's a hard no. If you're too busy to take care of yourself, how do you expect to deliver the quality standards in customer service that you hold yourself accountable to?

Collectively, we're currently navigating financial instability, trauma, grief, fear of losing loved ones, etc. Individually, we all have different thresholds to dealing with every situation from that list. In the hair and beauty industry specifically, knowing what to do now to best prepare for the return to trading is stressing more than one. The day salons and spas reopen will come, and with that, work stress will follow — it's fine, it's inevitable. However, if you don't set healthy boundaries for yourself now, in the long run, you run the risk of burning out.

In this episode, podcaster, educator and hairstylist Dawn Bradley (@dawnbradleyhair) opens up about her scary tango with burnout, discusses scarcity mindset, how to set healthy boundaries and ultimately, how to avoid running yourself to the ground once lockdowns get lifted and there's an influx in demand.

Ronan Perceval On Facing The Current Crisis & Making Money While Your Salon Is Closed

April 6, 2020

[158] Something to keep in mind about the COVID-19 crisis is that salons and spas are going to be really busy when it all ends. The biggest concern right now, however, is the sheer uncertainty of how long this is going to last. If your salon has been forced to close, what are you doing now to ensure you come out the other end of it all standing strong? Will your salon be ready to handle a busier period than what November and December usually look like?

Featuring founder and CEO of Phorest Salon Software, Ronan Perceval, this week's conversation explores ways you can cut costs immediately, successful avenues for generating revenue while you're closed and why you need to start planning for your business re-opening.

Joe Bolger On Employment Law Tips For Getting Salons Through The COVID-19 Crisis

Joe Bolger On Employment Law Tips For Getting Salons Through The COVID-19 Crisis

March 30, 2020

[157] In Ireland & the UK, salons and spas have been forced to close as a result of government measures to overcome the spread of the novel coronavirus. In contrast, this is only being seeing in some states in the USA. While both situations (opened or closed) are significantly different, the pressure on business owners and their staff remains — only in different ways.

Featuring Joe Bolger, Managing Director at ESA Consultants, this week's conversation explores employment law tips that can help salons through the current crisis, regardless of their current state of operations.

Disclaimer: ESA Consultants is an Irish-based company, offering employment law advice and expertise. However, this week's guest, Joe Bolger, has both studied his Degrees in the USA, UK & Ireland and worked in the industry in several countries including the USA, Germany, UK and Ireland. While this episode will inevitably have some share of focus on Irish employment law, it also covers some universal sub-topics, such as reasonable accommodations during these times, non-compete agreements, etc.

Millie Kendall MBE On Future-Proofing Your Brand Through Reputation, Education & Innovation

Millie Kendall MBE On Future-Proofing Your Brand Through Reputation, Education & Innovation

March 23, 2020

[156] With every new decade comes new challenges, and to discuss some of the beauty industry’s — gig economy, inclusivity, diversity, etc. — was the initial idea for this episode. However, adding another layer to the existing industry-related challenges is now the current coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide crisis.

Businesses who thrive during uncertain times and economic downturns often have strong brands. But what does it take, really, to future-proof your brand in this industry? Is the way of the future all about listening to the consumer's voice? Featuring retail maven, brand creator & CEO of the British Beauty Council Millie Kendall MBE, this week’s episode explores three essential aspects of strong brand building, and how to best prepare for some of the challenges the industry is currently facing.

Disclaimer: As new governmental measures to flatten the COVID-19 curve get announced daily, more and more country leaders have required all non-essential businesses — including salons & spas — to close. With the pace at which the crisis is evolving, we will be working on reducing the elapsed time between recording and publishing of upcoming episodes. However, please bear in mind that this conversation was recorded about 1.5 weeks ago, at a time where salons and spas around the world were only starting to see cancellations creeping into their diaries. We thank you for your understanding.

Dom Lehane On What Hosting The ‘How to Cut It’ Podcast Has Taught Him About Success

March 16, 2020

[155] Success, a lot like values, is defined differently by every one of us. Have you ever stopped to think about what it meant to you? Is it overcoming a hurdle, spending enough time with your family or winning awards? How do you define success, and when will you know you'll have got it?

To help us explore the topic, we asked Dom Lehane (@domlehane), host of the 'How To Cut It' podcast to join us on the show this week. A fourth-generation hairdresser himself and the original founder of HairClubLive.com, his experience in the hairdressing and barbering industry combined to the hundreds of conversations he's led and featured on his podcast made him the perfect candidate for quite the interesting discussion.

Josh Hafetz On Motivation And Unleashing Employee Peak Performance

February 17, 2020

[151] If you're a salon or spa owner who finds it hard to keep staff engaged and motivated in their work, you're not alone. A recent survey Phorest has run within the hair and beauty industry found that of all the HR and training aspects of running a salon, a whopping 25% agree to say that retaining and motivating staff is their most difficult challenge. The good news is, it doesn't have to be that way.

Featuring the President of Art of Business (@art_of_business) Josh Hafetz, this week's conversation explores the science behind getting your team 'in the zone', how habit plays a role in locking in both motivation and long-term results, and what you can do to foster these habits.

Marcus Allen On Facing Challenges & Thinking Creatively About Your Salon Business

February 10, 2020

[150] Often described as "thinking outside the box", creative thinking is what drives innovation and progress. Seeing situations from a different perspective can have a substantial impact on problem-solving, communication, leadership, sales, marketing, and many other aspects of running a business. For many, though, thinking in new, unconventional ways when facing adversity doesn't come naturally.

Featuring Global VP of The Refinery Marcus Allen, this week's conversation explores the value of creative thinking in business as well as the link between leadership, self-awareness, vulnerability and salon management.

Dr Seán Williams On Hairdressing & Its Cultural History From The 18th Century Onwards

December 2, 2019

In history, the hairdresser is an artistic and self-made character. Featuring Dr Seán Williams, lecturer in German and European Cultural History at the University of Sheffield, this week's conversation connects the past and its legacy to the present, and celebrates hairdressing and its cultural history from the 18th century onwards.

Ronit Enos On Financial Literacy & Changing Salons’ Money Stories

November 18, 2019

[140] Money is great, right? Making lots of money is even better, right? But let's ask ourselves why. Why do we want more money? Like it or not, money brings shame and confusion. It's intimidating, and we make up stories about money that aren't true.

What's your money story? Maybe you grew up with too little? Too much? Perhaps you were taught that it was wrong to want more? To ignore the money because it just caused too many problems? We bring all those stories into adult life and our businesses. Numbers and finances can be overwhelming and can paralyse you if you let them. But you don't have to.

Featuring Ronit Enos, salon and spa business coach and the creator of SalonCadence.com, this week’s conversation is all about changing your money story.

Joshua Howard & Andrew Best On Increasing Profitability And Making Every Drop Of Color Count

October 7, 2019

[135] Running a successful hair colouring salon presents many challenges, and other than the normal day-to-day struggles, there are two well-known and fundamental challenges across the industry: hair color waste and not charging for all color services and treatments.

Featuring CEO Joshua Howard and COO Andrew Best of color management system Vish (@vishsalons on Instagram), this week's conversation explores how without effective systems, salon owners are left to manage their color business with estimates and manufacturer benchmarks, and what strategies can help eliminate waste, improve relationships, and increase profits.
