We're getting to a point where someone might have 1/40th of the human interaction they would have had 20,30 years ago. That creates a premium on the hair and beauty industry's craft. Robots and AI might be knocking at various industries' doors, but they'll only be replacing repetitive and monotonous jobs. According to the World Economic Forum, the ability to read, understand and adjust behaviour when facing various emotions will be one of the top ten skills businesses will be giving importance to in the coming years, especially when hiring staff.

Despite this well-known fact, staff targets get a bad rap: they don't work, or they're too much effort to manage. Even from the employee's perspective, there's often a pushback. A shift in how to approach them can solve all of that. If what you're saying to your staff looks anything like this: "I need you to do this and reach these numbers by x, without any support whatsoever," it's no wonder things aren't working.

[125] With the damage to our environment and the increase of plastic waste an ever growing concern, becoming more knowledgeable about the products we use, our actions and habits is key in discovering how we can make friendlier choices for both the environment as well as for ourselves.

In 2012, Professor Denise Baden from the Southampton Business School was awarded funds from the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) to engage with hairdressers and their clients to establish more sustainable practices. Following the success of this project, she has since been working with awarding organisations to further embed sustainability into the industry’s practices. A couple of weeks out of Conscious Hair & Beauty taking place in London at which Professor Denise Baden will be speaking, this episode explores ways to motivate eco-friendly behaviours and sustainable solutions in the salon industry.

[105] Rebooking has a massive impact on salons and spas’ client loyalty. Unfortunately, not every client is always ready to pencil in a new appointment while they're at the til. More even, it can be challenging to get your staff in the habit of asking people to rebook, and well maybe you don’t have a receptionist, so you’re relying on your team when they’re busy getting ready for their next client.

Phorest's new predictive rebooking SMS feature is geared towards clients who, based on their individual history with your salon, are due to come back to the salon soon. It's pre-emptive: you're offering these clients the chance to book maybe before they've even realised they need to. And from over 400 salons trialling this feature in February 2019, a total of €2,000 worth of rebooking SMS has been sent, resulting in over €93,000 salon revenue from the appointments booked as a result of those texts. Nearly a 50:1 return there, and on average an extra 6% clients retained against salons who hadn't been using the feature. It started strong with the podcast getting nominated and winning Silver in the category ‘Best Podcast’ at the 2017 Digital Media Awards! Then, Phorest FM got shortlisted another two times throughout the year, at the Sockies Irish Social Media Awards and the Podcast Awards (supported by iTunes’ Podcast Connect).

[095] More than 450,000 people in Ireland experience depression (1 in 10) at any one time but many hide their condition and never get help. Aware’s message is one of hope: recovery is possible. Early intervention, as well as ongoing support, are very important.

Recently, a few employees in Phorest arranged for a speaker from Irish charity AWARE to walk the company through the importance of looking after your wellbeing in work. Off the back of that, this episode features AWARE Director of Services, Bríd O' Meara, to discuss the topic of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, but also, in life in general.

[089] Unwelcome news in the Irish hairdressing industry this month. On October 9th, 2018, the Irish Minister for Finance announced a VAT (Value Added Tax) increase for hairdressing services along with a rise in National Minimum Wage and employers PRSI contribution, resulting in an industry call-to-action held on October 23rd, 2018.

To take the pulse on the matter, Killian and Zoe are bringing you straight into the action of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland's Protest March to gather clips from the protest, interviews featuring Bridget Haren and Sean Taaffe, President and Vice President of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland as well as a discussion with Phorest's very own Declan Kehoe and Lisa O'Brien.

Phorest Salon Software's stance: Beauty salons have always been on the 13.5% VAT rate. However, we strongly believe VAT rates for both should be reduced to 9%, given as both types of salons face similar challenges. Read more in CEO Ronan Perceval's letter to the industry here.
