[226] No matter how long you've been in business, hiring new employees can be a long and tedious experience. And while this isn't ever likely to change, it doesn't have to be dreading either. The systems you set in place can make a world of difference: the more powerful the systems, the more frictionless the process becomes and the clearer the expectations for everybody involved.
Featuring business coach, trainer and author Steve Gomez (@saloncoachsjg), this week's episode explores interdependent leadership concepts, the mindset needed in today's recruitment context, building out a recruitment plan, ways to get your team involved in the process, and how to lay the groundwork for a long-term productive relationship between a salon and its new hire.

[225] There are many industry awards out there, but nothing is more important than what your clients think. We are an industry driven by referrals, and no matter how good you are at selling your business, word-of-mouth will always have a unique power. And as the pandemic has migrated a serious amount of our social life online, online reviews have become a staple in our culture. In fact, according to BrightLocal's research, the average consumer reads ten reviews before feeling able to trust a business, and 73% of consumers only pay attention to reviews written in the last month.
Hence, this week we'll be discussing ways to earn and leverage award-worthy reviews with former Community Manager North America Paige Janiszewski, who will also share insights on the Client Experience Award 2021 and one of the industry's most advanced automation tools: Phorest's Online Reputation Manager.

[224] If you've been listening to the conversations taking place within the industry this year, you'll know that most of them focus on recruitment and performance. However, what isn't being addressed as much is leadership communication and the detrimental impacts of falling short in that department. Have you ever wondered what processes salons that excel at communicating with their teams have in place? How they go about daily, weekly and monthly meetings? How they ensure that staff feel listened to, considered and appreciated?
Featuring South Carolina-based Silver Salon co-owner, leadership coach and podcast host Evan Silver (@evansilver.co), this week's episode explores what effective leadership communication looks like, how it must focus on cultivating trust, keeping staff engaged and moving as one guided by salons' cultures and core values and how more than ever, it is crucial to the success of salon businesses and teams.

[223] Tired of watching money come in but little-to-none falling to the bottom line? Struggling with your productivity rates? Trying to meet the ever-changing demands of growing a salon or spa business in today's fast-paced economy and consumer trends is not an easy feat, and just because your salon or spa is busy doesn't mean it's profitable or healthy.
This week's episode welcomes two great minds from the coaching group Strategies to share a "road trip essentials" analogy they use to talk about salon finances and numbers. So hop in the rear seat as Michael Yost (President, Lead Presenter & Coach) and Dennis Gullo (Certified Coach) discuss what it takes to drive your business to both excellence and success & share the three fundamental financial statements you'll need in the process.

[222] There is always room for us to grow and strengthen the way we go about operating our businesses. Pivoting isn't an easy feat and sometimes implies reinventing the wheel. But often, it doesn't. Many times, it's just about finding solutions to meet customers where they are and make sure you give added value for the long-term.
This week on the show, we welcome salon owner and business coach Peter Ciardulli (@p_eter_c_iardulli) to recount his story of pivoting during COVID-19 and discuss the importance he put on nurturing close connections with clients — especially after the second lockdown, which in his area, lasted seven-plus months.

[221] With widespread staff shortages being a real challenge in the industry at the moment, growing and developing your current team has never been more critical. Earlier this year, Phorest released its Staff Performance feature allowing staff to monitor their own KPIs such as revenue, transactions for services, product retail and client booking. Staff Goals now expands on this and empowers stylists & therapists to set goals for themselves against these key metrics.
Joining the show to discuss the latest Staff Performance feature upgrade are Mobile Designer Rich Cullen and Phorest Go Product Manager Daniel Devitt. Check out the video version of this week's episode for an exclusive preview of 'Staff Goals'!

[220] Do you tend to avoid tough conversations or feel like you're walking on eggshells, over-explaining and justifying everything? Are you feeling resentful or passive-aggressive? Have you ever caught yourself thinking — and thinking it often: No one else can do this work. My clients need me. If something goes wrong, it's my fault. If someone's upset or angry, I caused it, and it's my job to make them feel better.
If you're a people-pleaser, an empath or a joy seeker, this episode's for you! Featuring Chief Awesomeness Empowerer & Context Creator at Passion Squared, Nina L. Kovner (@ninakovner), this week's episode explores codependency in business (particularly in salons and spas), how it affects the way you lead, how you hire, how to recognise patterns and practice healthy boundaries, and so much more.

[219] In her recently published book "How To Make Your Salon Work, So You Don't Have To," salon owner, coach, and author Kelly Shaw (@kellyshawme) shares the journey she underwent to get her salon to a space where everyone — her team, her clients and herself — felt happy and appreciated.
This week's episode explores one of the many processes she relies on to create an emotionally secure environment for her team to thrive in: the Team Esteem Ladder. More specifically, we talk about the four specific steps it involves, the role of a leader, hyacinths and the importance of clear communication.

[218] As an entrepreneur, you have beliefs about the things you don't always have precise answers for. For example, whether the launch of a new product line or an online store will succeed or if your customers will react positively when you go from one way of operating to another. However, if you're not paying attention to your staff, customers, or even your market as a whole — if you're not ready to change said beliefs when things aren't working the way they should, you risk undermining the growth and prosperity of your salon business.
Pivoting isn't an easy feat, but the more you do it, the more comfortable you become with innovating and navigating uncertainty, all the while developing your staff into a seasoned team.
Featuring Haus of Heir leaders Ramiro Corrales (@ramirocorrales) and Cameron Kepford (@cameronkepford), this week's episode explores their deep desire to create long-term value. More specifically, we talk about their experience with embracing change, their strategies to mitigate risk, and address how you don't always need a crisis to pivot (not to say you shouldn't take advantage of one).

[217] Following up on our recent conversation with Advanced Healing Artist for L'ANZA and Salon Centric influencer Christopher Aaron, we turn our eyes to the UK, where, in a long-overdue change, the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Hairdressing have now been updated to include mandatory training in cutting and styling of afro and textured hair.
Featuring haircare specialist and co-founder of Cognito Hair in London, this week's episode explores Shareefa Jennings' journey in the salon industry, her thoughts on the announcement of the new standards, as well as what she deems necessary for growth both as a hairdresser and salon owner, inclusiveness and exceptional client care.

[216] Being a business owner can be an all-consuming reality. Along with the mental load of your daily to-do lists, you have to keep the big picture in the back of your mind. And while following your intuition is important (no one knows more about your business than you do), actively monitoring your salon's data will help you drive better informed decisions. Ready to turn insights into action?
To discuss Phorest's work on revamping its suite of salon reports, this week's episode features one of our own: Sean O'Sullivan, Associate Product Manager. You can also listen to Sean's take on setting and managing staff targets.

[215] We often talk about creating and fostering welcoming salon spaces for all clients, but are we truly walking the talk if some clients have to travel outside of their neighbourhood to get even just a simple cut and style?
Featuring Christopher Aaron (@christopheraaronstudio on Instagram), Advanced Healing Artist for L'ANZA and Salon Centric influencer, this week's episode explores the relationship between hair and identity, the barriers to catering for all types of hair, and discusses fostering inclusion both from an individual and industry-wide perspective.
Offering an inclusive experience in your salon doesn't necessarily mean completely changing your setup or services. However, it at least means outgrowing our comfort zone as hairstylists, and to that, there are plenty of benefits.
