Season 6

[245] According to research commissioned by Mind, a mental health charity in the UK, one in three people feel that their work is the most stressful aspect of their life. While it might not feel like it to guests, the salon and spa environment is typically high-energy, bustling behind the scenes. And when you're in a place where you're leading other people, you have a duty of care towards yourself and your team.
In this week's conversation and ahead of her webinar with Phorest, Life & Business Wellbeing Coach Sonia Magnier (@soulfully_sonia) opens up about her story within the industry, discusses how wellbeing and wellness play into how we show up at work and shares tips for promoting good mental health and wellbeing within the business.

[244] Setting up a salon or spa business can be challenging and costly. On the other hand, buying an existing salon can reduce the setup costs. Still, there are other considerations. You're investing and inheriting equipment, branding, existing relationships, a team and clientele that might not fit your vision for the business' future.
In this week's conversation — and with much honesty, vulnerability and pride — multi-award-winning salon owner and entrepreneur Stefania Rossi (@stefaniarossirecruitment) reflects on the hardships and success stories that came with buying her London clinic, Utopia Beauty & Advanced Skincare.

[243] "It kind of never happens to get to choose how you can look, to that extent."
At Phorest, passion and ambition connect us with salon owners and staff all over the globe, helping you grow and celebrating every success. We say yes to equality and no to hierarchy, and we show up tirelessly every day.
Publishing a third rerun so soon after the last two wasn't part of the plan for May, but our host Zoé's vulnerability and willingness to share a bit of their story tied in perfectly with a conversation aired on the podcast last year.
In this episode from Phorest FM Season 5, we discuss the birth of Kristin Rankin's brainchild — The Dresscode Project — explore the ins and outs of creating safer spaces for all clients and chat with salon owner & educator Lauren Wilde on the importance, meaning and the day-to-day of a salon that's more inclusive of folks across the gender spectrum.

[242] Ideas come in all shapes and forms, but often, they originate from dialogues, experiences or observations. To create products or services that serve others — and more than that, make a difference in their lives — we must welcome new perspectives. Allowing our hunches to connect with other people's hunches typically leads to better results.
Featuring Phorest's Chief Product Officer Patrick "Paddy" Monaghan, this episode explores the concepts of product mindset, perspective, tunnel vision and stickiness whilst diving into Paddy's experience developing products and features within the hair and beauty industry.

[241] It’s never a pleasant experience to deal with unhappy customers, but it’s really not that uncommon in the service industry. Prevention is important, and so is making a real effort to make amends when possible, but sometimes, the best thing to do is to break up with a client.
In this week’s conversation, Hair Educator and Business Coach Kristen Lumiere (@kristen.lumiere) talks about the difference between a challenging service vs a client you’re better off breaking up with, the common anxiety-inducing situations you might face as a stylist or salon owner and shares both her five-step process to resolving them and the must-know tips you need to break up with a client.

[240] The second Phorest FM episode rerun picks up right where things left off last week: seeing things from a different perspective. When we frame an idea, a problem, or an opportunity, we choose a perspective. Look at a “glass as half-empty,” and we start conserving and protecting. See the same glass as “half-full”, and opportunity and growth emerge. Our thinking shifts simply by how we choose to look at or “frame” something.
From a conversation aired in 2019, this week’s rerun brings to light Jay Williams’ teachings on making better choices for your business, organisation and people.
As you listen to this classic from Season 3, consider this: are your clients and your staff loyal? Or are they satisfied? Whatever your retention rate is for both, your opportunity is to ask yourself where you need to build trust with those you aren't retaining.

[239] Phorest Growth Fund applications for 2022 are now open! We decided to offer two episode reruns for the occasion, the first one being a conversation from 2018 with business coach, CEO of High Performance Stylist and now Phorest Growth Fund panellist David Barnett.
Managing a salon isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but salons and spas that find real success within the industry are the ones that run and function with clear confidence, commitment and communication. What if, like David proposes, “instead of marketing to new clients, we were able to build a business and become famous for being the best place to work? And marketing to the best stylists in your area. Because let’s face it, if you’ve got the best stylists in your area working for you, or they’re knocking on your door wanting jobs, and they’re fully booked, then your job is done. You have a highly successful business.”
As you listen to this classic from Season 2, consider this: how do you think about yourself as a leader, and where is there room for growth?

[238] Returning and new customers are obsessing over brands like never before. But beauty and hair salon marketing can feel overwhelming both time and money-wise. Not to mention how somehow, you're just 'supposed' to know how to be a social media and content marketing master, even though those skills are rarely taught in school.
That's why this episode, featuring Founder and Director of Content Kweens Ben Lifton, is all about content marketing and how it's one of the best ways to convert your community into high ticket clients nowadays.

[237] International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day to recognize and celebrate women's and girls' social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. But also a time to raise awareness of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the work remaining to be done.
In that spirit, this week's episode features a woman who literally lives her life at full throttle while also helping other women succeed and grow.
In this conversation, Shay Hoelscher (@shayhoelscher), race car driver, CEO and owner of hair care brand Privé (@privehair), recounts moments in her multifaceted journey, discusses purpose and giving back and explains the many ways her passion for both the beauty and motorsport industry have intersected throughout her life.

[236] If you know a bit about stoïcism, you'll know that turning adversity to advantage is an ancient art:
"The impediment to action advances action.
What stands in the way becomes the way." (Marcus Aurelius)
Amongst many other things, overcoming setbacks requires changing our perception, practicing persistence and channeling our energy so we can put it to good use.
In this episode, hear industry and Eufora educator Hunter Donia (@hairbyhunty) tease his Eufora Global Connection business session by sharing his journey as a hairstylist, discussing the difficulties and lessons learned from rebuilding a clientele in a new city and how he now leverages social media to build an overflowing book of dream clients!

[234] It’s 2004. Phorest’s Founder & CEO Ronan Perceval is hunched underneath the salon reception desk, troubleshooting a hardware issue in the first infant version of Phorest’s Software.
“I wondered if I would ever truly delight the salon owner waiting in front of me. I can barely remember what else happened that day, but I remember this very clearly. It was my goal to make sure that everything in her growing business was working smoothly and I knew if I got it right, together we could bring more revenue in through her door.”
Of course, we now know that he did. Fast forward to 2022, and Phorest has become a global success story with over 8,500 businesses using its products and services. With each new business that joins, Phorest is inspired to be better.
In this episode, hear Ronan Perceval on what makes the hair & beauty industry so unique, how a small idea grew to a global software company with salon professionals at the heart of it, the various lightbulb moments and key milestones that make the story of Phorest, and so much more.
